Myths are super fun! I mean, who doesn't love to discuss whether or not the earth is flat or debate about whether bigfoot could be in your backyard. Either way, myths allow us to tip the jar of curiosity and explore the belief that something unusual could be so factual.
I'm all for discussing the possibilities of myths but there are some I just can't seem to wrap my head around. What myths just make you sit with your nose scrunched because you absolutely don't want to believe that they are true? For me, those travel myths get me every single time. I guess I get it, times are changing and the world has become more advanced than ever but if that's so, why must these travel myths still linger refusing to die off?

If you are still holding onto these travel myths, it's time you let them go! The impossible can happen through travel and it's about time you believe it! Don't worry, we are debunking some of the most common travel myths just for you because now is the time to let go of the things that are holding you back!

traveling is super expensive

I cannot list how many people have came up to me wondering how I'm able to travel without being completely poor afterwards and I completely blame it on their belief that travel has to be expensive! There are so many planning tools and resources that allows you to travel on a budget if you put energy into finding out how.

Traveling on a budget boils down to the basic who, what, where, and how. Who are you traveling with? Weigh the pros and cons - traveling alone means you are only responsible for yourself and can choose the cheapest options but traveling with a group can allow you to split all of the expenses, ultimately saving you even more money. What do you want to do? There are so many affordable activities and excursions. It can't get any more affordable than FREE so check out the free tours that are in the area and explore. Where do you want to visit? Location is key when wanting to travel on a budget, choose a budget-friendly destination that still offers everything your heart desires. It is possible! And lastly, how? Are you wanting to just take a few days cruise or did you want to fly and stay for 2 weeks. Depending on your budget and your desire, traveling will only break the bank if you allow it to!

travel sites give the best deals

This may tie into our previous myth but this is one that you need clarification on and boy, do I have it for you! It is awesome that you can visit one travel site and compare hotels and other things that advertise "the best deal of your entire life". Trust me, if you take the time to research, you will find that a lot of those deals are a little more expensive than shopping directly on a hotel's website.

Go even deeper and book your place of stay right from airbnb, as they have great prices!

Third-party travel sites may seem convenient but please do your research before you commit to a price as there could be something better lingering beyond the obvious.

sleeping on a plane will rid of jet lag

We have all had the feeling where our internal clocks just can't keep up with where we decide to travel. This may come as a shocker but jet lag has nothing to do with how much sleep you will get and everything to do with your body desperately attempting to readjust to a different climate.

For example, our bodies have trained themselves to be awake during these times and sleep during these times and has nothing to do with daylight or nightfall. I recommend preparing for the change a few days before your trip so that way your body isn't completely thrown off track.

exchange your currency at the airport

You can definitely do this but if you are anything like me, you probably don't want to deal with the hassle and the fees that are associated with it. If you really don't want to use your debit card (which probably has the best exchange rate), then step into your bank branch before you leave and have your currency exchanged there. Although there is still a fee, it is lower than the airport.

Save your time and your money and prepare ahead!

buy your plane tickets months in advance

Remember when I briefly spoke on the advancements of today? This is a perfect chance to elaborate! In the past, there weren't as many flights taking off so it was common for the prices to go up the closer you got to your travel date. Now, with flights leaving minutes apart, you have a little more wiggle room to purchase your ticket.
I am not encouraging you to wait till the week before to purchase your plane ticket. But I am encouraging you to do your research and depending on the location, you could find that being flexible can offer you a lot of brownie points and actual dollars. For me, I like to keep an eye on plane tickets starting months in advance and

Prices fluctuate and this could be beneficial to you.

follow the locals

When it comes to the hottest meal spots and true authentic culture, it is a great idea to reach out to a local to see what they have in mind. When it comes to exploring and seeing those off the chart views, I would try to reach out to other travelers to see what they have enjoyed on their trips. I mean, have you explored that cave on the edge of your hometown? Probably not!

Join some travel groups on social media and ask for some recommendations. I guarantee, you will find exactly the activities and excursions you are looking for.

Lastly,

someone has to speak english

Okay, there may be a bilingual soul there to help you on the way but you should never assume so. It is always a good idea to learn basic communication skills in whatever country's language you are visiting.

This provides you with a legup if you are in a situation that you need help getting out of, for example, if you are lost. Learning basic sentences or common practices can help with your confusion and even make the locals in the area appreciate your effort. Besides, wouldn't it be nice to be able to order your meal in the waiter's language rather than struggling for 20 minutes trying to explain that you don't want onions on your sandwich?

I like to think of travel myths as hurdles, that if you plan for them, you can jump over them without a problem. Stop living in the center of these myths and letting them hold you back from your travels. Myths are made to be debunked and yes, WE DEBUNKED THEM! So plan your dream getaway or hop on a group trip, you deserve it!
