Tip #1: Have Compact, Travel Sized Items

As a self-proclaimed makeup addict, it was mind-blowing to try and think about how to bring all my makeup with me during my backpacking trip around the world. When I told my friend and family close to me that I was quitting my corporate job to travel the world for an unset amount of time with just a backpack, the first question I always got was “But how are you going to bring all your makeup palettes with you?” Don't get me wrong, I was SO excited to be going on this journey but it did break my heart a little bit going without my 15 different palette choices and endless brushes. However, I wasn't completely makeup-less and there is a way you can make it happen so you can still feel like yourself and look fabulous while you are trotting around the globe!

I had spent so much time on the internet trying to find a solution to my makeup vanity vs. 50-liter backpack dilemma and unfortunately, there were no answers. Most gals just didn't take any makeup with them at all, or only had the very basics. Here are my tips and tricks on bringing all your makeup with you while traveling so you don't have to leave anything behind!

The key to bringing all of your makeup with you while traveling is to have smaller packaged products. I knew I couldn't be bringing my favorite Jaclyn Hill eye-shadow palette, but that didn't mean I couldn't bring any eye-shadow palettes. Look for mini/compact palettes at the drugstore that will be little enough for you to fit multiple in your makeup bag. I did have to purchase some new items specifically for this, but it was worth it! With these, you can have multiple colors to choose from and have your entire look in one spot. These are some of the palettes I brought with me, and with just these three mini palettes, I had a full eye look, under-eye powder, bronzer, highlight, and blush:

Tip #2: Use a Flexible Makeup Bag

To make sure your makeup fits in your suitcase, backpack, or whatever your luggage is, you need to make sure your makeup bag can be flexible. This way, if you buy a little too many souvenirs, you can shove it or maneuver it freely into different areas of your luggage. If your makeup bag is too structured, then you won't be able to make it fit in any tight places. I used a pencil case shaped makeup bag, and it was able to fit everything I needed perfectly. Here are a few options online that would be great for bringing all your makeup with you while traveling:

If you are doing your makeup every day, then you are going to run out of makeup remover wipes pretty quickly (not to mention how bad they are for the environment). Purchasing a makeup remover towel was so much easier to have with me. Even though this isn't a makeup item, it still was a huge game-changer for me while traveling- both short and long term. They are compact, and I could use it for two weeks or so before having to throw it in the wash. Here is the one that I have and love:

Tip #3: Bring a Makeup Remover Towel Rather Than Wipes

Tip#4: Take Multi-Purpose Products

Try your best to bring products that you can use multi purposefully. Some ideas would be using eyeshadow instead of eyeliner and cream sticks that you can use on the eyes, lips, and cheeks, etc. If you can make this work, it will save you so much space in your makeup bag to be able to take along the items that are a must-have for you!

Tip #5: Make a Plan and Only Take the Essentials

If you are headed to a sunny, warm beach then I don't think you need to be taking your super heavy foundation and dark red lipstick. Same for if you are mainly going to be hiking or outdoors. Try to match your makeup items to what the intentions of your travel will be. If you are headed to a retreat in Bali waking up to do yoga at sunrise, then you certainly won't be needing your full glam makeup routine with you. By planning ahead, this allows you to bring more of the products you will actually use on a daily basis.

Traveling is such an eye-opening experience and brings us so many memories that we will remember for the rest of our lives. In those memories, you don't have to be looking like you just got out of bed or wishing you would have had your makeup routine with you! It certainly is possible to bring all of your makeup with you while traveling and still have room for all your other essentials and souvenirs along the way. Happy travels ladies!
