Congratulations! You have started a podcast. Did you know that as of today there are 1.4 million podcasts in the world? Crazy right? Well, you are apart of that 1.4 million and that’s AMAZING! In this blog post, you are going to learn exactly how I find guests for my podcast using Instagram. Please keep in mind that Instagram is not for everyone in every niche but it works for most.
Let's dive in!
Step 1: You need to know the exact topic in which you want to interview for.
Example: Season 3 of my podcast is all about solo female van life. I knew I needed to look for women who are traveling the world and living in their van alone on Instagram. This brings me to step 2.
Step 2: Figure out what kind of hashtags someone like this would use.
In my example, I wanted to interview solo female vanlifers. So, I searched #solofemalevanlife on Instagram. This currently has 5k+ posts. You want to search for hashtags that have a smaller number of posts so you can find exactly what you’re looking for. When I search for this, I am met by hundreds of women who travel alone in their van. Now, it’s time to get them on the podcast.
Step 3: Click on their picture + then click on their name.
As you can see per the picture, their name appears in two different places. Clicking either one will take you to their profile.
Step 4: Now that you’re on their profile, you’ll want to double-tap their photo to heart it.
The reason we do this is to get their attention. If I simply sent this person a message, they may not see it. Instagram doesn’t always show messages from people you are not mutually following. Since I am not following her and she is not following me, it might get buried.
Tip: Like 5-10 of their pictures if you really want to get their attention.
Step 5: Comment on 2 of their pictures with the following message.
Hey, I am currently interviewing for a series on my podcast all about “INSERT TOPIC HERE” and I would love to have you on as a guest, check your messages.
Step 6: Actually message the person.
Be direct. Start off by introducing yourself and your podcast and then ask them if they are interested.
BONUS TIP: Try to find people with a high engagement rate. This is something I teach in detail to my students who come to me for podcast consulting. You want to find someone with a high engagement rate so this way you know that when they share the podcast with their audience that people will actually listen to what they have to say and will want to download their episode.
Step 7: If their email is also on their page, email them the same thing you sent them through DM’s.
