As a new hiker, it can be hard to know exactly what you need to have a successful hike. It wasn’t until 2020 that I found my love for hiking. Hiking is a great way to spend quality time outdoors with yourself or someone you love. What you need to prepare for your hiking trips depends on how long the hike is and the weather but here are a few things you’ll need to have for your next hiking trip.
Hiking essentials for every stage hiker
#1- AllTrails app
Hiking is not the same without the AllTrails App. This app is so helpful because you can see trails nearby, check the weather right on the app before heading on your trip, and you can see the length of the hike. It's so convenient in helping you plan the perfect hiking trip. The app will show you hiking trips for beginners and more advanced hikers.
As a solo female traveler, my favorite thing about the app is honestly the pro feature. An annual plan costs only $29.99 or you can sign up for a three year plan for $59.99. With the pro feature, you are able to:
#2- Have great shoes
Hiking boots are essential for all hikes. They keep your feet warm during winter months, the protect your feet against hard rocks, and they help to keep your feet dry from water. Make sure you are investing in a great company for hiking boots.
#3-pack snacks + water
I truly cannot stress the importance of packing snacks with you. I once watched this story of a young girl who went hiking. As she was hiking, she slipped and fell and was stuck somewhere for three days. She had no access to food or water because she did not pack any which resulted to her almost dying.
This was a real life scenario that can happen to anyone. That's why it's important to truly plan for your hikes. Bring snacks with you to prevent you from starving to death if you're stuck. Also bring snacks with you to help keep your energy going during long hikes. Examples of great snacks to bring would be:
#4- check the weather
Personally, I don't enjoy hiking in the rain or if it is below 20 degrees. It's important to know what conditions are good for your hiking pleasures and pack accordingly. If it is raining and you want to go on a hike, be sure to pack a poncho. Umbrellas are too difficult to carry while it is raining. If it's cold outside, be sure to bring a coat that is built for the outdoors and has wind resistance. If it is super hot outside, be sure to pack sunscreen.
The weather can dictate if you take a long hike or a short hike. By knowing the weather in advance, you can pack accordingly to be prepared for any situation. Instead of downloading several apps, make sure you have the AllTrails app on you, it tells you the weather so you can be fully prepared for your next hike.
